Summer Activities That Can be Dangerous to Your Smile
June 20, 2021
The sunny days of summer create fun-filled memories that can last a lifetime. However, negligence can lead to dental health problems that can ruin your fun. To prevent any dental mishaps, it’s important to know how to protect yourself. Your dentist in Chaska wants you to enjoy your summer as much as possible, so here are a few ways to avoid the most common dental issues.
Eating Cold Foods
When the sun is beaming, it’s only right to snack on a cold popsicle, snow cone, ice cream or other delicious treats. Unfortunately, the joyous taste bud experience could come at the expense of your dental health. If there is an existing issue, eating these types of foods could trigger tooth sensitivity.
Here are some of the reasons you may experience some discomfort:
- An exposed tooth root
- A cavity that you weren’t aware of
- A shallow enamel (the outer layer of the teeth) bed
If you feel an uncomfortable sensation, you should consider it as a warning sign of something developing and bring it to your dentist’s attention.
Aggressive Toothbrushing
If you’re like most people, you keep a busy schedule in the summer. Therefore, you may be prone to hurrying and brushing your teeth too aggressively. This can possibly cause damage to the enamel (the hard-outer layer of the teeth) and leave you more susceptible to tooth decay.
To be on the safe side, use a toothbrush with soft bristles and slow down when performing dental hygiene. The more careful you are, the better your chances of maintaining a healthy and happy smile for the summer.
Consuming Too Much Sugar
If you have a sweet tooth, it’s easy to go overboard. The more sugar you consume, the greater the chances of experiencing tooth decay and sensitivity. That’s because oral bacteria feed on leftover sugar on your teeth and gums, which can quickly lead to plaque development.
To better protect yourself, limit your consumption of such items as sweet tea, sports drinks, sodas, lemonade and juices. If you choose to indulge on occasion, just be sure to brush and floss 30 minutes afterwards.
Playing Sports Without a Mouthguard
For active people, summer is a prime time for participating in some type of sport, whether it’s softball or outdoor basketball. Before taking the field or court, it’s best to have a custom mouthguard made by a local dentist. Therefore, if you have a sudden collision (which can easily happen), your teeth and gums will be protected. By being proactive, you have a better chance of preventing a painful dental emergency.
In addition to taking a responsible approach to your summer activities, it’s well worth your time to visit a local dentist for a preventive checkup and cleaning. In doing so, you can better protect your smile and make this a positive and fun-filled summer!
